Letter: Expand ‘Democratic socialism’

What is Democratic socialism? According to Wikipedia, “democratic socialism” is a political philosophy that advocates achieving socialist goals within a democratic system.

Already, we have achieved a number of goals/programs that are socialistic in nature, as follows: 1) public education, 2) police, fire and emergency services, 3) U.S. Postal Service, 4) Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, 5) sidewalks, roads, bridges, 6) public buses, light rail, 7) parks, beaches, zoos, 8) libraries, museums, and other programs that benefit all of our citizens.

The next major goal/program to add to the above list is affordable health care that covers all citizens. The U.S. is the only developed country that does not have some type of health-care program for all. We are the wealthiest country in the world. All we lack is the will to achieve this worthy goal. So, in the Nov. 6 election, only vote for candidates to higher office who will promise to work towards health care for all.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
