‘Next man up’ mentality helps Camas to 48-35 win over Skyview

Injuries lead to player shuffling for Camas, Skyview in 4A GSHL showdown

CAMAS — Shane Jamison estimated middle school ball — or even earlier — was the last time he spent as much time in the backfield as he did Friday.

Like a host of Camas Papermakers, the senior two-way starter at receiver and safety stepped up when called on in 48-35 win over Skyview in a 4A Greater St. Helens League football game that vastly ended differently than it began.

At least, personnel wise.

That next-man up mentality is what Jamison said helped elevate the Papermakers (5-3 overall, 3-0 league) to next week’s showdown with top-ranked and undefeated Union (8-0, 3-0) for the league title. The winner gets the 4A GSHL’s top seed and a home game for the Week 10 state preliminary round.

“Guys came through when we needed it,” Jamison said. “That’s Camas football. We’re all in it all week, we all know our assignments so when it comes to game time, we’re all ready.”
The past few weeks haven’t been kind to Camas for injuries. Down are three starting running backs — Blake Deringer (concussion), Zach Terry (shoulder) and Randy Yaacoub (leg) in addition to sophomore quarterback Jake Blair (foot), who coach Jon Eagle sai could return by next week’s regular-season finale.

Friday, Camas turned to third-stringer Blake Ascuitto when starter Andrew Boyle went down with a right knee injury late in the first half, and used four ballcarriers.

Sophomore Jacques Badaloto-Birdsell rushed for 112 yards on 18 carries that included a touchdown. Jamison rushed for a game-best 133 yards on 17 carries and the 25-yard touchdown run with 2:37 to play that gave the Papermakers an insurance score in what was a one-score game for much of the final quarter.

Skyview pulled within 42-35 with 10 minutes, 14 seconds to go when tight end Micah Baylous had three straight catches on his way to a 13-yard touchdown catch. That was Skyview’s closest deficit since 21-14.

By the the time Baylous’ score made it a one-score game again, multiple back-ups and second-string players were difference makers.

Both teams endured second-quarter injuries to two-way players that helped shape the high-scoring first half. Skyview’s Jalynnee McGee went down inside 6 minutes left in the first half getting tangled up on his 18th carry of the game. At that point, McGee had 129 yards rushing and scored the Storm’s first two touchdowns as part of a combined eight first-half touchdowns by both teams. He left the game on crutches on crutches.

So did Boyle for Camas, also a starting safety and all-league punter and kickoff specialist.

Boyle was a part of all four first-half Camas touchdowns, including a 60-yard interception return for a score that pushed Camas’ lead to its largest of the game at 35-14. But inside a minute left in the half, Boyle’s read-option run ended with teammates assisting Boyle off the field.

That’s when they turned to Ascuitto, and the back-up delivered on Camas’ final scoring drive.

Ascuitto, the junior-varsity quarterback, has seen limited varsity action in the prior seven games.
“I had a lot of nerves the first couple of goes,” he said. “After that, my teammates had my back.”

Ascuitto helped orchastrate a 71-yard, eight-play drive that included converting two crucial third-down plays: Birdell’s 12-yard run on a third and 9, and hitting Luc Sturbelle for a 25-yard catch down the left sideline.

That drew a ton of praise from Jamison, who scored the rushing touchdown a play later.

“I’m super proud of him,” Jamison said. “That was amazing.”

Ascuitto finished 9 of 15 for 106 yards. Sturbelle had 12 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown.

Tyler DeJong, who came in at tailback for McGee, had 39 yards rushing on nine carries.

Friday’s wins secured Camas a playoff berth. And Skyview (4-4, 1-2) can still clinch a playoff spot by beating Heritage next week. A loss sets up a three-way tie for third with Heritage and Battle Ground.

A season ago  the Storm had their 12-year playoff drought end by finishing third, and one spot out of a playoff spot.

“Hopefully, I’ll be back for the playoffs,” McGee said.
