Letter: Vote no on Initiative 1639

By Stephen Boynton, La Center
Published: September 3, 2018, 6:00am

Is this initiative for public safety? Firearm accidents contribute only about 6 percent of all accidental deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Is this to protect us from criminals and mass shootings? Criminals, madmen and terrorists do not obey laws. It only disarms the law-abiding citizens, increasing crime as criminals no longer fear their victim. Nearly all mass shootings occur in “gun free” zones.

The real reason is to slowly disarm American citizens. Tyrants have always disarmed their population before taking over control. Why should we set ourselves up for potential tyrants?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
