Letter: Now is time to fund teacher salaries

By Stephen L. Ranney, Vancouver

As The Columbian has reported, the state Legislature has allocated nearly $1 billion to state school system funds for teacher salaries. Evergreen Public Schools administrators face many competing priorities for funds. Though doubtless worthy, I believe such initiatives come at a bad time. It is somewhat like adding balconies and cupolas to a house that needs basic work on the foundation. Now is the time to fund teacher salaries, the underlying purpose of the long-awaited McCleary decision. I would respectfully urge the school board and Superintendent John Steach to recognize the value of our teachers as foundational.
