A kitchen fire Sunday night at a home in the Father Blanchet Park neighborhood caused significant smoke damage, displacing the residents for at least a night.

Vancouver firefighters were dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. to the 7400 block of Southeast Middle Way. It took the initial fire engine about two minutes to arrive at the scene, Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Kevin Stromberg said.

The arriving firefighters spotted flames coming from a stove vent on the front of a two-story residence, Stromberg said.

Firefighters entered the home and extinguished the kitchen fire, which they had under control within 10 minutes.

The residents of the home declined help from Red Cross, but there was significant smoke damage throughout the house. They were unable to stay there for the night, Stromberg said.

A total of 14 firefighters responded to the scene.

Stromberg did not have any information about the cause of the fire. The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office did not immediately return a call seeking more details about the fire.
