Millen, Mount Si down Skyview 52-28

Cale Millen is the son of a star quarterback at Washington who plans to play collegiate football at Oregon.

Friday, he made Vancouver his playground.

Millen threw for 412 yards and seven touchdowns to lead Mount Si of Snoqualmie to a 52-28 win over Skyview at Kiggins Bowl.

Watching it all was his dad and Mount Si assistant coach Hugh Millen, who quarterbacked the University of Washington to a win in the Orange Bowl over Oklahoma at the end of the 1984 season.

Millen, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior, showed Friday why he’s one of the top QB recruits in the Northwest.

The University of Oregon commit now has 1,024 yards passing and 17 touchdowns in just three games this season. That comes after he threw for 2,447 yards, 32 touchdowns and just four interceptions last year.

“We couldn’t duplicate in practice what he can do,” Skyview coach Steve Kizer said. “I don’t know if anybody can put the ball in there like that. He’s the real deal.”

Five of Millen’s touchdown passes went to Jonathan Barrett, including a 72-yard dagger one play after Skyview had pulled within 38-20 in the third quarter.

Skyview (1-2) makes a point of scheduling tough non-league competition each year. After facing a Mount Si team that is tied for No. 2 in the state 4A poll, the Storm hope to move forward with lessons learned from their battles.

“We just hope we can keep getting better,” Kizer said. “We talked about how our 2011 team was 0-2. We lost 56-6 and were 400 miles from home in Coeur d’Alene. Then we won 11 in a row. We say ‘hey, if we can handle it, it will be great for us.’”

Skyview’s offense moved the ball well. Junior quarterback Yaroslav Duvalko threw for 315 yards, giving him 929 on the season.

But the Storm had to play catchup in the first half because of turnovers. There were two turnovers on downs in Mount Si territory and a fumble at Skyview’s own 5-yard line.

Meanwhile, Mount Si scored on five of its six first-half drives to lead 31-7 at halftime.

“We tried to stay simple and play with our technique,” said Skyview defensive back Cooper Barnum, when asked about defending a quarterback like Millen. “In the first half, we were a little rough with our technique. But after halftime we competed, which was exactly what we wanted. We didn’t give up.”

Tyler DeJong returned a Millen fumble 17 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to cut Mount Si’s lead to 38-20.

After Millen’s 72-yard TD pass, Skyview responded with scoring drive capped by Jalynnee McGee’s 4-yard touchdown run to pull Skyview within 45-28.

Barnum had 117 receiving yards, including a 49-yard touchdown catch on Skyview’s first drive. Mason Wheeler had six catches for 94 yards and McGee had 86 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards.
