A Vancouver woman was among the three killed in a head-on traffic crash near McMinnville, Ore., on Saturday.

According to the Oregon State Police, Joseph Hawkins, 19, of Salem was traveling east on state Highway 18 when, around 1:15 p.m., he crossed the center line into the westbound lanes.

His Pontiac Grand Am struck a Subaru Legacy head-on, killing him and two passengers in the other car: Mary Verdier, 59, of Vancouver, and Susan Heffel, 60, of McMinnville. All three died at the scene, according to the Oregon State Police.

The agency said why Hawkins entered oncoming traffic was still undetermined as of Sunday afternoon.

The Subaru’s driver, Roger Verdier, 70, of Vancouver, was transported to Willamette Valley Medical Center in Salem with serious injuries.
