Workers at 2 Portland Burgerville locations stage strike

PORTLAND — The Burgerville Workers Union went on strike Tuesday at two locations over the company’s reinstatement of companywide ban on buttons, the union says.

The one-day strike at the Montavilla and the 92nd and Powell locations is linked to unfair labor practice charges the union filed last week with the National Labor Relations Board, says a union news release. Workers will return to work Wednesday, the release says.

Vancouver-based Burgerville banned employees from wearing personal or political messages on their uniforms after 10 Portland workers sported “Abolish Ice” and No One Is Illegal” pins in August. The workers refused to remove the pins.

Because corporate and the BVWU are currently in contract negotiations, corporate committed to collaborate with the union on future button policies, the union says. However, Burgerville reinstated the ban, which the union contends was an illegal act during contract negotiations.
