Prep highlights: Fort’s Phelps places 2nd, Heritage’s Cibart 7th at Meriwether Classic

Fort Vancouver senior Emily Phelps finished second overall at the Meriwether National Cross Country Classic in Hillsboro, Ore.

She finished the 5,000-meter course at Meriwether National Golf Club in 18 minutes, 6.2 seconds, just behind the winner Lucy Huelskamp of Sunset (Ore.) in 18:05.

Columbia River sophomore Lucy Ianello was seventh in 18:33.1.

There were 240 runners in the girls varsity race.

Union was fourth out of 32 teams. Skyview placed eighth.

In the boys race, Heritage senior Ryan Cibart was the top Clark County finisher as he placed seventh with a time of 15:54.1. The winning time was 15:24.3 by Ahmed Ibrahim of Parkrose (Ore.).

Heritage placed eighth out of 41 teams.

Also, Seton Catholic junior David Carrion was 12th in 16:21.5. There were 319 in the boys varsity race.

Stars of the day

• Nate Kessi and Wilson Keller, Columbia River boys tennis, scored impressive 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-4 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles in leading Columbia River to a 5-1 victory over Mark Morris.

• Derek Kropp and Sam Borgmeyer, Ridgefield boys tennis, won three-set matches at No. 1 and 3 singles to help the Spudders beat Washougal 4-2.

• Bryanna Ungs, La Center girls swimming, won the 100-yard breaststroke with a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 8.98 seconds in a six-way meet with Camas, Battle Ground, Prairie, Washougal and Hockinson at Clark County YMCA.
