Letter: Maintain interstate system

I’m distressed by the proposal to have part of Interstate 5 become a toll road. We on the West Coast need this interstate, which is a lifeline for goods and services from Mexico to Canada. “I” should stand for International 5, which it is. To impose tolls would only raise prices for these goods and services.

If we still had a viable rail system, it could offer a cheaper alternative, but such is not the case and I know of no plans to get a modern rail system like China and Europe have.

This is another example of the lack of care for our country that our Congress displays, ignoring the country’s needs, such as a modern infrastructure. Also, they don’t levy the taxes to pay for their tax breaks for the wealthy, but just raise the nation’s debt and pass it off to our heirs.

The federal government built the interstate highway system for the good of the country; why don’t the Republicans, who control the federal government, pay for upkeep and expansion? Why do they think that all of the useless wars they have gotten us into take preference over our own infrastructure? After all, it was our parents and grandparents who built. Why do we neglect what they left us?
