Letter: HeLa creates traffic problems

It is a shame that the city of Vancouver and the Evergreen school district fooled the residents surrounding Henrietta Lacks High School.

When HeLa High was proposed, the residents were promised the students would not drive to school. Parents would not be allowed to pick students up at the school either. Students would be bused to and from their home high school. The residents thought this was a good idea as it would mitigate the increased traffic in our residential neighborhood due to the new school.

However, the city of Vancouver and Evergreen Public Schools have not kept their part of the bargain. Students drive to school and park in the surrounding neighborhoods. The school district does nothing to enforce the no-driving policy.

The residents have held several meetings with HeLa High administrators and representatives of the student council. The school will make a cursory attempt to enforce the policy for a day or two after complaints. But the enforcement drops to nothing again. It appears the school district never budgeted for any formal enforcement of their policy.

Meanwhile, mostly empty buses run from HeLa to and from the home schools. Paid for by your property tax dollars.
