Letter: Maintain C-Tran’s Route 39

By Sara Hitchcock, Vancouver
Published: April 11, 2019, 6:00am

C-Tran’s proposal to eliminate Route 39 is a detrimental mistake. C-Tran’s decision is about numbers with complete disregard for the people that their decision affects. This route provides much-needed transportation in the Rose Village and Fourth Plain Village neighborhoods.

Concerned citizens, fellow residents and I have repeatedly expressed to C-Tran the unjustifiable hardship they will create by eliminating bus service along 33rd Street and the northern portion of Grand Boulevard. All pleas for keeping service in its current form or an alternate form have been rebuffed as being something that C-Tran can’t do. They choose not to collaborate with riders to come up with a solution that works for both parties and it has become increasingly apparent that C-Tran does not want to provide essential bus service in our neighborhoods.

Their expectation is for riders to acquiesce to their deplorable scheme and accept all the negative consequences that will result. These consequences that C-Tran wishes to destroy us with include walking an extra quarter-mile or more on incomplete sidewalks with insufficient night lighting while contending with recurrently poor weather conditions and reckless drivers. I, for one, am tired of being told no and bullied into accepting the consequences to decisions that I did not choose and have fervently advised against.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
