Letter: Cheers for Senate Bill 5116

Progress is coming to Clark County. Gov. Jay Inslee’s requested legislation for 100 percent clean electricity, Senate Bill 5116, has passed both chambers in the Legislature.

Senate Bill 5116 will permit Clark Public Utilities to invest in more cost-effective conservation projects. The goal is to gradually reduce pollution from our power plant. Doing so will help protect our children’s future. We have huge opportunities for conservation in schools and commercial buildings. Instead of sending millions each year to Canada for their natural gas, we’ll use that money to create jobs locally in conservation and renewable energy.

Cheers to Inslee for his leadership, and to Sen. Annette Cleveland and Reps. Sharon Wylie and Monica Stonier for supporting SB 5116. Cheers also to the staff at Port of Vancouver for researching options for a climate action plan. Now we need the cities in Clark County to do the same.
