PORTLAND — Urban Airship, one of Portland’s most prominent young tech companies, said Wednesday it will now call itself just Airship.

Chief executive Brett Caine said the new name “conveys our performance, expertise and innovation.”

Founded a decade ago, Airship helped pioneer push notifications for smartphones, alerting people to breaking news, special offers, game updates and promotional materials. It has expanded to offer a variety of mobile marketing technologies.

Airship has raised just over $100 million in outside investment. In January the Portland company acquired its biggest European competitor, Accengage, bringing its workforce to 300 – close to half at its downtown Portland headquarters.

A number of Portland’s best-known tech companies have adjusted their names in recent years.

Puppet Labs changed its name to Puppet in 2016, Elemental Technologies became AWS Elemental in 2017 after Amazon bought the Portland company, and Portland transit technology company Globe Sherpa became Moovel after selling to Daimler — and then changed its name again to Reach Now.
