For all-around athleticism, few collegiate athletes across the nation can match Michael Schmidt.

Wednesday, the Corban University junior from Prairie High was named NAIA Field Athlete of the Week. That honor came after Schmidt broke the school’s record in the decathlon at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Multi-Event Championships last week in La Grande, Ore.

Schmidt’s score of 6,763 points is the second-highest in the NAIA this season. He finished in the top-three of all 10 events, placing first in the 400 meters (50.09 seconds), javelin (157 feet, 6 inches) and 1,500 meters (4:30.80).

“It has been a great year for Michael,” head coach Norm Berney told CorbanWarriors.com. “Any reward he receives is well deserved; he has put so much time and effort into the decathlon. In addition, his No. 2 ranking on the national performance list is a first for any of our track and field athletes.”

Schmidt is coming off a sixth-place finish in the decathlon at last year’s NAIA Championships. He is majoring in Media Arts with plans to become a filmmaker.

Brooke Williams, a senior from Columbia River, was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference field athlete of the week after breaking the Central Washington University record in the long jump. Williams leapt 19 feet, 2 inches at the Bryan Clay Invitational last weekend in Azusa, Calif. That ranks tied for ninth on the GNAC all-time list.

Peyton Fredrickson, a senior from Skyview, cleared 7-foot-1 in the high jump as Washington State competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational. That ranks No. 23 in the nation.

Brooke Roy, a freshman from Camas, set a Cal State Monterey Bay freshman record in the 1,500 meters, running 4:47.69 at the East Bay Invitational in Hayward, Calif., on April 13.

Softball

Jessica Flanagan, a junior from Woodland, went a combined 8 for 20 for Portland State over five games against Southern Utah and Oregon last week. She is hitting .336 for the season.

Baseball

Preston Jones, a junior from Mountain View, hit his second home run of the season as No. 2-ranked Oregon State swept a doubleheader against Arizona on Saturday. Over both games, Jones went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and batted leadoff in the second game.

Cody Hawken, a senior from Union, went 3 for 5 with seven RBI and his first home run of the season as Portland throttled San Diego 20-0 on Saturday. Jace McKinney, a senior from Columbia River, also went 2 for 4 with an RBI triple for the Pilots.

Tennis

Sammi Hampton, a senior from Skyview, helped Arizona State sweep Oregon to advance to the Pac-12 quarterfinals. She and Samantha Alicea improved to 13-2 on the season and 3-0 since being elevated to he No. 2 doubles slot.
