Letter: Don’t excuse abhorrent behavior

When the issue is racism, there is no middle ground. Greg Jayne’s sympathizing for Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s, R-Battle Ground, position vis-a-vis the Republican Party (or cult of Trump, as it has become), is unacceptable (“Herrera Beutler’s balancing act,” July 21, The Columbian). Racism is morally reprehensible, always. There is no middle ground. If one excuses Trump and his sycophants like JHB, one excuses racism. Trump is a racist; JHB by apologizing is a racist. Stop excusing this behavior. It only encourages more overt racism.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
