Everything has changed. Sadly, it took the tragic, senseless deaths of more than 30 persons to awaken our nation’s conscience. Now, however, there can be no doubt about a number of self-evident truths. The first, and perhaps saddest, is that our president is without question a white supremacist. When confronted by the recent spate of attacks, our consoler-in-chief failed us miserably. White House aides privately conceded his visits were a “debacle.” Mr. President, are you human enough to say, “I was wrong. I apologize for using dehumanizing, inflammatory rhetoric”?
The 2020 election has changed dramatically. Now we can and we will put on our gloves as we battle for the soul of America. Now we are all Latino. If ICE comes for a Latino in Vancouver, I will ask them to arrest me, too.
I am finding it far harder to hope these days. Yet, I believe unequivocally in a compassionate, inclusive God. God does not judge us on the basis of our differences. God upholds each of us in his loving embrace, including Donald J. Trump. Despite what is so tragic, may all of us stand up for and speak out for one another in this national crisis.
