Letter: U.S. should be welcoming

Recently the heated debate over which would-be immigrants are welcome to America has taken an interesting turn. Now it seems the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free” should be mainly white Europeans. If you’re brown, black or “of color,” stay away. Such people who call America home are victims of increasing racism and are too often targeted by white supremacists. Oh, and now another minority group will be victimized. Our LGBT Americans can be denied employment on the basis of their sexual identity. For all these, Lady Liberty does not “lift her lamp beside the golden door.”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
