Letter: Crack down on artificial sweeteners

Fatty acid liver disease is becoming rampant in our population. Stage 4 of fatty acid liver disease is sclerosis of the liver. This can be fatal to have this disease. I got NAFALD (non-alcoholic fatty acid liver disease) from eating too many carbs and sugars. My biggest gripe is that the food manufactures can advertise foods that are sugar-free. This term should be made to include all sweeteners. Sucralose, also known as Splenda, does not have to be counted when advertised as “sugar-free.” I read the ingredients of products and I’m totally surprised that the Food and Drug Administration allows food companies to mislead people.

LiverSupport.com made this comment: “Aspartame, Splenda, Sucralose, NutraSweet and Equal are all chemically manufactured sweeteners capable of creating toxic reactions in the human body. The government cautions against the use of any artificial sweetener by children and pregnant women. People with liver disease should definitely be added to this list.”

I am wondering if the food industries are in cahoots with the big pharmaceutical companies to make us sick and obese. No amount of politics will be able to stop artificial sweeteners in our food that we have become addicted to.
