Letter: Build train, customers will come

There has been some discussion recently about including light rail on the new I-5 Bridge. I believe that light rail is long overdue for Clark County. The benefits of light rail include reducing traffic congestion, reducing pollution, increasing property values, fostering economic development, and providing a means of transportation for the poor.

A recent letter to the editor stated that light rail would not be used in our area (“Take light rail off the table,” Our Readers’ Views, Nov. 14). This opinion is wrong for the reasons listed above and the fact that some drivers spend two hours or more per day commuting to Portland and back. There is a pent-up demand for light rail. To quote a sentiment from the movie “Field of Dreams,” “If you build it, they will come.”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
