Letter: More bridges are needed

Here we go again, spending millions for a study to replace the I-5 Bridge. Nearly a half a billion, yes billion, has already been spent on just studies. These studies ending in paying additional millions and millions to upstream businesses for losses because we won’t make the bridge high enough for larger boats to serve them. Now $45 million more has been allotted to just study it again.

Let’s stop and think. Multnomah County has 11 bridges over the Willamette River alone. There are only two over the Columbia River. We do not need to rebuild the I-5 Bridge at this point, along with causing years and years of additional traffic nightmare, we need more bridges. One to the west that bypasses Portland and Vancouver, like practically every other major city, and one somewhere to the east for more traffic relief. In the meantime, if you want to help with bridge traffic, the bridge’s posted speed is 50 mph.
