Letter: Work to preserve democracy

If you really care if you live in a democracy, it is time to look around and act. The greatest threats are coming from within, not from Muslims or immigrants.

Federal and state representatives calling themselves Republicans are doing all they can to destroy what we have. Their goal is to maintain power instead of preserving democracy.

These same “representatives of the people” have long pursued voter suppression and gerrymandering to maintain a grip on power and deny an equal vote to our citizens.

We have seen the rise of a no-compromise approach that has resulted in a legislative paralysis and a decline in civility.

The majority leader of the Senate has refused to allow votes on House-passed bills and has stated he will continue to do so if he retains his position in 2020.

They are taking charge of the federal judicial branch by abuse of position and changing rules. I get it if you have issues with the Democratic policy proposals, but that is where the survival of democracy stands in the near term. With a healthy democracy, you can continue to fight for what you believe in. Without a functioning democracy, you will be without a voice.

Make preserving democracy your No. 1 priority.
