Battle Ground Girls: Tigers begin by working on what they can control

New coach Dave McIntosh knows plenty well the 4A Greater St. Helens League isn’t going to be a picnic for the Battle Ground Tigers. The league is a gauntlet and the Tigers have an “uphill battle.”

Instead, McIntosh is focusing on what the Tigers can control. First and foremost, their attitude and work ethic. From there, it’s about establishing an identity.

“We want to bring back that toughness that Battle Ground has always been known for,” McIntosh said. “We want to be that tough team, that mentally tough team that can fight through adversity.”

The Tigers finished 5-15 a season ago and have lost 14 straight league games. McIntosh comes over from Mountain View, which finished 5-14 last season.

“We’re going to be fighters,” McIntosh said. “We’re going to battle everybody.”

On the court, senior point guard Megan Geiger will guide the ship. She’ll have softball standout Mallory Meyer, a 5-10 junior, to help her.

“A lot of people, if they don’t know those two girls, they’re going to know them by the end of the season,” McIntosh said.

Undersized post Elizabeth Miller, a junior, is also expected to be a key player for the Tigers.

Battle Ground’s nonleague schedule includes some potential confidence-builders in Fort Vancouver, Class 2B Mossyrock, Mark Morris and Evergreen. That quartet finished last season with a combined record of 11-66.
