Evergreen Girls: First-year coach starting something new and positive

After a year of “coaching drama,” as Caleb Dressler put it, the 6-foot-10 Evergreen High alumnus is hoping to bring some stability to the Evergreen girls.

Dressler served as a junior varsity coach last season and helped out with the varsity team. He was tabbed for the head coaching job this season.

“We struggled last year going through some coaching changes,” Dressler said. “So I want to be better, but I just want to have these girls be happy to be here every day. If that translates to wins, great.”

The Plainsmen finished 2-16 last year and fifth in the 3A Greater St. Helens League. This year’s team is a little longer inside, so Dressler hopes the team can find their post players. But he also wants his team to run the floor.

Guards Arrianna Walker, a 5-3 junior, and Uriah Gipson, a 5-3 senior, provide the opportunity to do so.

“Those two are key to keeping this unit and everyone going,” Dressler said.

That senior leadership will also be tasked with keeping everyone on track to meet the team’s goals.

“We’re starting with a new program here,” said Dressler, who played collegiate ball for Central Washington. “I want everyone positive and on the same page.”

The Plainsmen have three seniors on the team, four juniors and four sophomores.
