Columbia-White Salmon Boys: Bruins set to run

The Columbia-White Salmon Bruins will look a little faster this season. For the first time in third-year coach Evan Wiley’s tenure, the Bruins have the personnel to dictate a change.

“This is the first time we’ve had a group of guys that are athletic enough and have enough understanding of the game to play a little more up-tempo,” Wiley said. “In years past, we really emphasized slowing down and not getting caught running with teams that are stronger and faster. We’re going to cut them loose.”

Jacob Lockman is the lone all-league returner for a rather young Bruins squad. The 6-foot junior guard “stands out in his growth this offseason,” Wiley said.

He’ll be joined in the starting rotation by 5-10 wing Austin Charters, the football team’s quarterback, and 6-3 junior post Isaac Wang. Trout Lake transfer Chase Colloton, a 6-2 sophomore post, will also play significant minutes.

“He’s long and lanky,” Wiley said of Colloton. “He’s got a good basketball build and is just really athletic.”

The Bruins finished 3-17 last season and last place in the Trico League. They have not made the playoffs since 2011.

“We’ve struggled getting over the hump,” Wiley said. “I’ve told the guys we could win six or 16 games depending on how disciplined we play. We want to take that next step and use it to catapult further next year. That’s our focus.”
