LONGVIEW — A judge has sentenced child rapist Robert Munger to a minimum of 43 years in prison, a penalty that means the 70-year-old likely will spend the rest of his life there.
The Daily News reports Cowlitz Superior Court Judge Michael Evans sentenced the Kelso resident Monday to the highest end of his sentencing range.
Munger was convicted in several child sex abuse cases that took four trials and two years to complete. His attorney has said Munger will appeal.
Munger’s seven charges were handled in separate trials because they involved multiple victims. In his first trial in June, he pleaded guilty to possession of child porn just as jury selection was taking place.
A jury convicted him of child molestation in his second trial in October. Another jury convicted him of two more counts of child molestation in his third trial — also in October — but they couldn’t come to a unanimous decision a charge of first-degree child rape.
On Dec. 13, a new set of jurors found him guilty on that charge.
Police arrested Munger in June 2017 after a victim spoke with investigators.
Further investigation of electronic devices at his home uncovered thousands of images of child pornography, according to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives identified two other victims of abuse by Munger.
