UPDATE: The case against Jonathon R. McCarthy was dismissed May 1, 2019, without prejudice, meaning it could be re-filed at a later date, because the prosecution had been unable to make contact with the alleged victim, according to court records filed in Clark County Superior Court.

A man who allegedly stabbed his ex-wife’s boyfriend and tried to run him over last month made his first appearance Wednesday in Clark County Superior Court.

Jonathon R. McCarthy, 34, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant by Clark County sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of first-degree domestic violence burglary, first-degree assault and a domestic violence court-order violation, according to court records. He went to his ex-wife’s house in the North Sifton-Orchards area around 5:30 a.m. Jan. 30. McCarthy, who still has the keys to the house, attacked the woman’s boyfriend, identified as Casey Lambert Pipkin, 34, of Vancouver, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Pipkin and the woman were sitting in the garage and smoking when McCarthy pulled up in a 2012 Dodge Ram 3500, according to the affidavit. Pipkin hid behind a refrigerator in the garage, and McCarthy prevented the woman from entering the home, the affidavit said.

When McCarthy found Pipkin, he punched him in the back of the head five to six times, according to the affidavit. Pipkin stood up and started to fight back, but McCarthy pulled out a folding blade knife and stabbed Pipkin in his right leg, the affidavit said.

As Pipkin backed away, McCarthy slashed aimlessly in a carving motion and, according to the affidavit, said, “I’m going to kill you!” Pipkin defended himself with his left hand and suffered a severe cut when McCarthy made contact, the affidavit said.

McCarthy then got in his truck and attempted to run Pipkin over before fleeing, according to the affidavit.

McCarthy has a no-contact order with the woman, and he and Pipkin have had physical altercations in the past, the affidavit said.

Judge Bernard Veljacic set McCarthy’s bail at $250,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 20.
