Letter: Democrats reflect America

With the 2020 presidential election campaigns gearing up at an unprecedented rate, I have a couple of suggestions for the campaign slogans of the Republican and Democratic parties.

President Trump has proudly declared himself a nationalist, and he repeatedly has given, at least, tacit support to white supremacy and other far-right hate groups. His unfounded fear tactics and draconian actions to block immigration from predominately nonwhite countries have been unrelenting. In view of all of this, and so much more, perhaps he should be truthful for once and make his 2020 campaign slogan: Make America White Again.

If the Democrats truly are earnest in their desire to re-establish the United States as a global leader in fighting climate change, reversing the trend toward isolationism, protecting the environment, supporting allies and being wary of traditional foes, advocating for democracy and human rights, and curbing the disproportionate political power and influence of the ultra-wealthy and huge, multinational corporations, then perhaps their 2020 campaign slogan should be: Make America America Again.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
