Columbian staff photographer Alisha Jucevic was recognized Friday with an Award of Excellence in the prestigious Pictures of the Year International photo contest.

Jucevic’s entry was one of five that placed in the spot news category. The winning photo captured a compassionate moment as Clark County Fire District 6 firefighter Dominic Sepe comforted Olivia Calton, 15, after a fire at her home on the evening of July 30, 2018.

Pictures of the Year began as a photo contest in the spring of 1944 in Columbia, Mo., when the Missouri School of Journalism sponsored its first Fifty-Print Exhibition contest. The contest evolved to include magazine photographers, underwent a name change and merged with the National Press Photographers Association’s contest. Then, in 2001, the contest was opened up to international entries.

Contest judging began Feb. 11, and not all of the categories have been judged yet.
