Letter: Democratic socialism is beneficial

By Lynn Alsobrook, Vancouver

Democrats need to better explain the difference between Democratic socialism vs. capitalism. True capitalism is a government run by corporations strictly for their benefit, while Democratic socialism provides its citizens with services and protections such as Medicare, Social Security, a minimum wage, a 40-hour work week, a safe work environment, protection against age/sex/religious discrimination in housing and the workplace, child labor laws, FDA regulations to keep our food and drugs safe, etc. Is it possible we currently live in a Democratic socialist society?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
