Freezing temperatures cause icy roads in Clark County

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement warning of black ice in Clark County.

Forecasters said Wednesday night that icy roads were likely through the night and into Thursday morning.

“Showers will continue dissipating (Wednesday night). As they do so, skies will clear and allow for surface temperatures to cool near and below freezing,” the weather service said.

Streets in downtown Vancouver were frosted in spots this morning. A section of Northeast Minnehaha Street, around the 4100 block, is “a sheet of ice,” according to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian.

Several school districts outside the metro area have decided to start two hours late. Battle Ground’s north schools and Camas school district opted for delaying the shoolday; that means no morning preschool in both districts. Hockinson School District said Bus 204 is on a snow route. More information about the school delays can be found here.

The county communities listed on the special weather statement include Battle Ground, Ridgefield, Washougal, Yacolt and Amboy.

Forecasters expected the dip in temperatures to create treacherous driving and walking conditions. Moisture left on untreated surfaces likely froze.

“Temperatures will remain below freezing through Thursday’s morning commute,” forecasters said.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has no active travel alerts for Clark County as of 7 a.m. Stop-and-go traffic on interstates 5 and 205 has backed up to around state Highway 500 in Vancouver, according to traffic maps, which only show a single crash near the interchange for the highway and I-5.

Officials cautioned drivers to slow down and allow for extra time to reach your destination. Bridges and overpasses may be worse than other roads, they said.
