I am writing this letter concerning high school start times. With the growing number of schools in the Vancouver area starting their regular hours later than before, shouldn’t schools be required to do so citywide or even statewide? Lots of information has been gathered to prove that later start times benefit teen learning. I found a lot of great information at cdc.gov. Young adult sleep is the most compelling argument to start school later, yet most high schools in the U.S. (93 percent) still start before 8:30 a.m. High school sets teens up for their future, therefore shouldn’t the school boards be attempting to get teenagers on a healthy sleep schedule? Why haven’t schools started to adapt these changes in their own districts?
