The Port of Vancouver’s annual lecture series starts with a presentation on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers work on maintaining dams and waterways in the Columbia and Snake river systems 6:30 p.m. March 6.

Presenter Kevin Brice is deputy district engineer for project management in the Corps’ Portland District, which covers northern Oregon and southern Washington. He’ll talk about the agency’s work to maintain multipurpose dams on the Columbia River for flood risk management, water supply needs, vessel navigation, recreation and more. He’ll also go over the Corps’ $257 million rehabilitation of jetties at the mouth of the Columbia River and maintenance of shipping channels.

On April 9, Washington Grain Commission Program Director Joe Bippert will talk about wheat and barley grown in Washington and how the grains are a large factor in Eastern Washington’s economy. The state’s wheat crop was assessed at $691 million in value in 2017.

Both lectures are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at WareHouse ’23’s event space, 100 Columbia St. No. 102, Vancouver. The lectures are free, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. Sign up at 360-693-3611 or RSVP@portvanusa.com.
