Those of us who live in the historic Hough neighborhood are affected everyday by uptown employee parking, staff parking at Hough Elementary School, and employee parking at county buildings.
Our homes were built in the 1920s, before parking was included on-site. We have to depend solely on street parking for deliveries, guest parking, household maintenance, emergency services and getting groceries into our homes. Some of our streets are narrow, limiting parking by street design. Hough Elementary School employs approximately 90 full-time staff, plus traveling staff, volunteers, parents, and buses for handicapped students from the district. They supply 25 parking spaces from August through June, five days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The homeowners are expected to supply 65 free parking spaces for school employees plus any other folks with business at the school. As it stands now, many employees have an expectation of free parking and choose not to consider those of us who have no other options.
My suggestion would be to create employee parking in already existing city-owned parking garages, plus providing shuttle transportation to and from the various business sites. I envision a financial solution to be paid for by both the employer and employees.
