Regarding Jaime Herrera Beutler’s recent editorial about the government shut down: Her reasoning is flawed, shallow, and weak.
The White House is basically holding the country hostage over building this disdainful wall, again showing how Trump throws a temper tantrum to get his way. This is not governance or leadership. He has no negotiating skills or depth of understanding, so this is the only way he knows how to operate.
Herrera Beutler’s comments that we should just “take it off the table, and move on” treats the potential wall as a trivial matter, and dismisses the underlying importance, reasoning, morality, and humanity not to build it. This serious threat to our American ideals is not something to dismiss as just another budget item or “deal breaker.”
This is a potentially serious change and turning point not only to how the U.S. deals with immigration, but what immigration means. It’s a big part of who we are as a country and deserves high levels of debate, study, and analysis. To glibly say we should “move on” shows Herrera Beutler’s lack of understanding as to the scope of the monumental seriousness and impact of this issue.
