Letter: No need for semi-automatics

In response to Mr. Bob Rodgers, “Semi-automatic ban is ridiculous” (Our Readers’ Views, Jan. 11): “Along with every other service member who enlisted or was drafted in all of America’s calls to arms.”

Don’t pretend to speak for me, or any of the other veterans. Let them speak for themselves.

It’s an old argument that if you can go to war at 18 then you should be able to buy a semi-automatic weapon at 18. That dog don’t hunt and here’s why. Semi-automatic weapons are made for one purpose and that is to kill another human being, but in a war that’s the mission, isn’t it? Kill more of them than they kill us. It’s not like walking into a school or a church or a movie theater or a restaurant and killing unarmed and innocent people. They don’t shoot back. And don’t even get me started about arming teachers.

At 18, I enlisted in the Marines and fought in the Vietnam War. The difference here is I spend every day all day long for two weeks learning how to fire the M-14 rifle, and another 13 weeks to respect its awesome power.

Ban bump stocks, yes; banana clips, absolutely; but unless you are in the military or the police force, why would anyone need a semi-automatic weapon?
