PORTLAND — Urban Airship, a Portland marketing technology company that enables push notifications on smartphones, said Wednesday it has acquired its biggest competitor in Europe.

The Oregon company said it paid cash and stock for Accengage, which provides push notifications and similar mobile marketing technology, but didn’t disclose a value for the transaction. Online startup database Crunchbase said Accengage has raised $9 million altogether, most recently in a $6 million round in 2017.

Urban Airship has raised just over $100 million since it was founded in 2009, including a $25 million round last summer.

With Accengage’s 80 employees, its workforce grows to 300; that includes 140 at its Portland headquarters.

Wednesday’s deal is unusual in that an Oregon technology company is buying a competitor rather than the other way around. The state’s tech businesses tend to operate in market niches and so are much more commonly sold to larger companies.
