The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the body found Monday in the Columbia River near Tidewater Cove as Leif Vigeland.

Vigeland, 36, of Vancouver disappeared while training for a triathlon. He was last seen Thursday leaving his east Vancouver home on his black Trek road bike. The bicycle was located Saturday at Wintler Park along the Columbia River.

Around 5 p.m. Monday, a boater near Tidewater Cove called 911 to report that a body was floating in the river, according to a Vancouver Police Department news release. The Vancouver police and fire departments responded, along with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol.

Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp confirmed Tuesday that Vigeland’s body was recovered.

Emergency personnel spent more than 2 ½ hours at the scene. Soon after the body was discovered, a thunderstorm passed over Clark County, forcing responders to temporarily halt before the eventual recovery, Vancouver Fire spokesman Joe Spatz said.

The medical examiner has not yet released the cause and manner of Vigeland’s death.
