A truck hauling sand was involved in a four-vehicle crash and tipped over Thursday morning on southbound Interstate 5 in Hazel Dell, stalling traffic for nearly three hours. Crashes on both southbound I-5 and Interstate 205 in the Vancouver area slowed the morning commute.
The 1999 Kenworth dump truck crashed shortly after 8 a.m. at Milepost 5.5, near 99th Street. It blocked all lanes of traffic, but vehicles squeezed by on the right shoulder, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The onramp from 99th Street was also closed for cleanup.
Two SUVS were merging onto I-5 from 99th Street when one of them, a black 2004 Lexus, driven by George R. Sullivan, 67, of Vancouver, failed to yield the right of way, according to a Washington State Patrol crash memo. The Lexus struck a black Jeep Wrangler, causing the Jeep to lose control and enter the freeway.
The Lexus then struck the dump truck, rolling it onto the driver’s side. The toppled truck and Lexus struck a black 2019 Honda CRV, pinning it against a concrete barrier, the crash memo states.
