Letter: Herrera Beutler wrong on vote

The House voted 240-187 Tuesday night to officially condemn racist language from President Trump, a motion supported by four House Republicans.

Trump on Sunday directed a series of tweets at Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley, saying the four congresswomen of color should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Almost needless to remind your readers, three of the four congresswomen were born in the United States, and all four are citizens.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, naturally voted against the motion. She apparently believes it’s fine and dandy our nation’s president rolls out a racist trope telling people who don’t look like him to “go back” to a mythical somewhere else. In 2016, Trump boasted he “could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters.” Observing her lockstep allegiance to both a flawed president and hear-no-evil party, Herrera Beutler just might be one of those voters. We’ll remember this come Nov. 3, 2020.
