The internet once held great promise as a tool for democratizing political expression. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter emerged and provided a user-friendly means for ordinary people to express their opinions over the internet.
However, these companies today are run by authoritarian leftist ideologues.
They are cracking down on dissent. And they have the legal right, because the First Amendment only applies to government restriction of speech. Their rationale is to censor “hate speech,” but they define it so broadly as to encompass anything they disagree with.
The political left cheers this on, and complains that they are not shutting down dissenters fast enough.
It will be interesting to see where all this leads. Can the left in the U.S. succeed in turning a nation with the internet and with a history of free speech into a nation whose civil liberties more closely resemble those of North Korea?
