Letter: Methanol plant is ridiculous idea

By Janine Robben, Kalama

I am a resident of Kalama. I live approximately four miles upriver from where Northwest Innovation Works hopes to build a methanol manufacturing plant. I strongly oppose this project.

The Port of Kalama’s commissioners recently voted on an amendment to NWIW’s lease which prohibits exported methanol from being used for fuel.

NWIW’s plan is to export this methanol to China. Honestly, how will the commissioners — or anyone else — track how the methanol produced in Kalama is used in China? I would say this is the most ridiculous idea I’ve ever heard of, but I’ve already used that argument for the plant itself.
