Regarding your editorial on the Port of Vancouver’s proposed clean energy policy (“In Our View: Port, proceed with caution in fossil-fuel debate,” The Columbian, June 17): I support the proposed clean energy policy at the Port of Vancouver, which says, “The Port shall not pursue new bulk crude oil or coal terminals.” I urge them to improve it by saying that the Port of Vancouver shall not pursue any new bulk fossil fuel terminals. Such a statement is not a ban, nor will it affect existing operations at the port.
It is like the resolution any smoker might make to break a bad habit: the unintended consequence is that your family and friends would have cleaner air.
The fossil fuel industry might not be happy if the Port of Vancouver adopts this policy because it might inspire other ports to take a similar position. But for the sake of our children’s future, that is what we must do.
We need the port to adopt this policy and we need other jurisdictions to do the same, as soon as possible.
