Letter: Arts essential to community

In reply to Stephanie Turlay’s letter “Don’t support fluff programs” (Our Readers’ Views, June 26): The arts are not “fluff.” The arts are an essential part of a city’s public image, the face a city presents to attract visitors, businesses and to engage with citizens. All of the arts combined can bring into a region more money than sports events (for statistics see “The Rise Of The Creative Class” by Richard Florida). A coordinated and planned arts program is an essential part of good city planning and governance.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
