Letter: Speak up for health care

By Caroline Kaplan, Vancouver

The Trump administration has begun a war. Not with North Korea, Russia or any other foreign power, but against us, the American citizens.

The Trump/Pence administration has issued their order to instate the gag rule — a federal policy aimed at targeting the 40-year-old Title X, thus taking away patients’ access to affordable reproductive health care — affecting the safety and well-being of our citizens.

It should be an individual’s right to receive comprehensive and reliable health care, regardless of their financial security, and the Trump administration is clearly violating this right. Our country benefits when our citizens are responsible with their reproductive and sexual health: screening for STDs and cancer, taking birth control not just to ensure only planned children are born but also for a women’s right to be a functioning member of society; and receiving quality sexual education.

These are services that our government should encourage our citizens to use, not penalize and risk their very lives based on their economic standing. I implore every person to be alert and vocal on this issue because it is one that will only be defeated with volume, not silence.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
