Letter: U.S. can address climate woes

I’m an unapologetic believer in the ability of the American people to meet the goals of the Green New Deal. My parents belonged to the “Greatest Generation,” which not only survived the Great Depression but immediately mobilized as one to fight World War II. The new generation I see spearheading the Green New Deal movement is just as aware of the enemy that threatens their future survival and just as willing to fight it. So if you’re not going to help them, at least get out of the way.

World War II, like the Great Depression, cost a lot of money when we already were deeply in debt, but we emerged into an era of great prosperity. The Green New Deal will create a clean-energy economy, adding $500 billion to our GDP annually (IPCC), provide millions of permanent local jobs in every part our country, and make family farms profitable again. It will also end the 300,000 projected annual deaths from carbon pollution in the U.S. (MIT.edu) and the over $800 billion it costs Americans every year in medical bills (Forbes).
