Agency grapples with large animal neglect cases

Shelter in Cowlitz County considers $3 million expansion

LONGVIEW — In the course of one Saturday afternoon last month, the Humane Society of Cowlitz County rescued 55 goats, 10 chickens and three sheep during an animal neglect investigation in the county.

The goats had been cooped up in two rooms — almost 30 in each. They were on average 40 to 50 pounds underweight and had respiratory problems from living in their own filth.
