Warm temperatures that led to the season’s first instance of a child falling out an open window prompted Clark County Fire District 6 to offer free window latches to residents.

The free window stops are available during regular business hours at fire district’s main station, 8800 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave. For more information, call 360-576-1195.

KidCo Window Stops control window opening height and width and prevent kids from falling. The fire district is offering the product as part of Safe Kids Clark County, a group led by Clark County Public Health that works to prevent childhood injuries.

“As evidenced by last night’s Vancouver case, recent hot weather is substantially increasing the risk of children falling from open windows,” the fire district said in a news release.

On Monday afternoon, a toddler was seriously injured when she fell from a second-story window at the One Lake Place condominiums in Vancouver.

Medics, police and firefighters were called shortly after 3:20 p.m. to the condominiums at 5264 N.E. 121st Ave., Vancouver, for a 23-month-old girl who fell from the window to the sidewalk below, said Kevin Stromberg, a paramedic-firefighter with the Vancouver Fire Department.

The girl was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital. Stromberg said she was in serious condition. Her condition as of Tuesday morning was not immediately available.
