Letter: Headlines show reality

“Midwest downpours prompt more evacuations.” “In Alaska, climate change increasingly disrupts daily life.” “Heavy rains fill streets in Houston.” “Insurance claims from deadly California wildfires top $12 billion.”

These are all headlines from the front page of the In The Know section (The Columbian, May 9). And on the opinion page, Kathleen Parker’s column, “Can Earth’s demise unite us?,” details how humans are in the process of eliminating a million species, including quite likely our own. This may be fake news to the deaf and dumb, but to the rest of us it is a wake-up call. Thank you, Columbian, for tip-toeing around your conservative base and putting the reality of our garbage-based economy before our eyes.
