Dollar Tree in Vancouver fined $503,200 for unsafe conditions

The state Department of Labor & Industries announced Thursday a $503,200 fine against a Dollar Tree store in Vancouver, alleging unsafe conditions. It’s one of the largest fines the agency has ever issued.

The agency accuses the store at 6700 N.E. 162nd Ave. of having blocked emergency exit routes, unsafe ladder use and improper stacking of merchandise among the numerous safety hazards.

Beaverton Burgerville to close, Vancouver chain announces

Burgerville announced Wednesday it would close its central Beaverton, Ore., restaurant June 16.

The Vancouver-based company has leased the space at 11900 S.W. Canyon Road since July 1, 1969.

“After careful evaluation, (the company) has determined that the building is near the end of its useful life,” the company said in a news release. “Due to ecological considerations and wetlands conservation, a major remodel of the location is not possible.”

One seriously injured in head-on crash in Washougal

One person was seriously injured Tuesday morning in a head-on collision involving three vehicles in Washougal.

The injured driver was taken to a local hospital. Occupants of the other two vehicles suffered minor injuries, according to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Teen who died of cancer named Mr. Hudson’s Bay

A Vancouver teenager who died of childhood cancer last year was named Mr. Hudson’s Bay on Saturday.

Michael Little, who died in October of Ewing-like sarcoma, was posthumously named the winner of the annual pageant after his family raised $21,518 for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, the lion’s share of the fundraiser’s $37,386 total.

U.S. News tells Washington state ‘You’re No. 1’

Washingtonians who listen closely may hear a few chants of “We’re Number One! We’re Number One!”

It won’t be coming from sports fans, but from civic boosters and chamber of commerce types trying to attract new residents or businesses to the Evergreen State. At some point, Gov. Jay Inslee is apt to mention it. Other government officials may follow suit.
